I describe and analyze the fact that in (Gheg) Albanian, extraction of a phrase from an embedded clause can displace that clause, provided that the core moving phrase reaches the clause edge. Multi-clausal pied-piping can also occur, which allows several complex, but principled, word order possibilities. I argue that these patterns emerge straightforwardly given the hypothesis that movement passes through the edge of each embedded clause. I also argue that Albanian has a multi-layered clausal periphery.
